Hello everyone, we have the first new moon of 2026! This new moon occurs in the zodiac sign Capricorn. The new moon occurs exact on 19 January 2026 at 6:52 AM (AEDT). This marks the start of a new lunar cycle and it is a wonderful time to set intentions for the year-ahead and even further into the future.

About a New Moon

A new moon occurs when the moon meets the sun in the sky. Because they are together, the moon is not illuminated by the sun's light and the moon becomes dark to us. The moon is not visible to us in the evening, the moon is taking time out at the start of a new cycle. Time out to make plans and set your intentions.

A new moon commences the start of a new lunar cycle. We have approximately 12 new moon’s each year, usually one in each of the 12 zodiac signs.

plants seeds. If you visualise when you plant seeds in the garden, they are planted in the darkness this is symbolic of the new moon phase where we are in darkness but making our plans and setting intentions.

A wonderful activity to do at the new moon is to meditate, and open yourself up to visions that present themself. The new moon phase is your time to make the plans to make those visions your reality.

The New Moon in Capricorn

When we combine the new moon phase with the zodiac sign Capricorn, we have an opportunity for long-term planning.

Since the sun and moon will both be in Capricorn, we have an extra concentration of Capricorn energy. Capricorn is a very practical sign, with the patience and sturdy work ethic to bring something into physical existence. Consider what is a major piece of work you would like to accomplish in your life? It could be a marriage, raising children, a self-sustaining vegetable garden, building a business or designing your forever home. All of these things are a marathon and not a sprint, that is very much Capricorn energy.

As the traditional sign of the zodiac, Capricorn New Moon is a time for creating new traditions. Since we have started a new calendar year, this is an optimal time to consider your traditions.

You may wish to start a project that requires your hands. Capricorn doesn't cut corners, values quality over quantity and has the skill to build something.

This new moon is a time for trusting and listening to your inner wisdom.

A walk in nature to connect to Capricorn’s element earth. Ideally, solo and without headphones that way you are connecting to the earth and nature but also because Capricorn does well as somewhat of a lone ranger. They can manage alone, and absolutely need time in solitude for reflection.
Spend time outdoors to connect with the earth and the energy of Capricorn. This time in nature can help you to ground your goals into reality.
Watching the sunrise or sunset. We are in Capricorn Season at the time of the new moon and the sun is our life force.
