How to Romanticise Your Life This Autumn

How to romanticise your life this autumn.

The term “romanticise your life” is doing the rounds. I love it, because it is encouragement to fall in love with our regular daily lives.

Most of our life is made up of simple, ordinary moments. If we are only living for the big events or holidays, we will be unenthused about the day-to-day.

Romanticising your life is to fall in love with your regular moments that make up your life. It is to lean into the feminine part of your soul and soften. It is to gently create simple moments of joy and love.

Life is happening right in front of us. My encouragement to you is to fall in love with the ordinary. Find simple joys in your daily life to romanticise.

The Energy of Autumn

I’ve got a list of ideas below to romanticise your life this autumn. But this isn’t to overwhelm you, they are mostly simple things with minimal spend. You don’t need to do much, in fact, the energy of autumn is about contracting down. Flowers, the trees, fruit, vegetables, the daylight… all of these things start to dwindle and slow down. There is a gentle contraction occurring in nature around you in autumn.

Autumn is a time for gentleness. There is a mystery to this season. Nature starts to quieten. Some leaves change colours and we get some crunchy leaves falling from the trees! The is beauty in the world around us.

We begin to layer up with clothing. We start to turn to fire and candles for comfort and warmth. The cosy socks make an appearance. Autumn is a comforting season.

What we are reminded of is that we don’t bloom year-round. Autumn is a time for reflection and gratitude. Autumn is a wonderful slow living guide. If you are reading this early in the season check out my post on celebrating the Autumn Equinox.

Onto some ways for how to romanticise your life this autumn.

  1. Align with the Sun

Our two luminaries the sun and the moon govern our sky. The sun and moon dictate our seasons and govern the time.

The sun guides all life on earth. The light from the sun provides the season. As we deepen into autumn, the days continue to shorten. Gone are the long and abundant sunny days of summer.

To align with the sun, start to know what time the sun rises each morning. Learn what time the sun will set each day. Where possible watch the sunrise each day. The shorter waves blue and green wave lengths from the sun can’t penetrate, so we are in awe at the beauty of red, pink and orange.

Fall in love with the sunrise every morning to romanticise a part of your life.

2. Brew an Evening Hot Beverage

An evening ritual of brewing a hot beverage is a simple way to romanticise your nights this autumn. I am currently doing a magnesium and hot chocolate blend to unwind sometime before bed. It’s comforting to sit with this warming drink and read my book by incandescent lamp light.

You may prefer tea to my hot chocolate. Get cosy and make it your evening ritual so you take the time to enjoy it!

3. Connect with Nature

Witness what is happening in the world around you. Nature is our greatest teacher. To romanticise the season, we want to observe and do as nature is doing. In autumn as everything slows down, you should do. By living in opposition to what is happening in nature is to create friction.

Look up some local bush walks close to your home and get outside in the morning air on the weekend or a morning you don’t have work. Take your time on the walk. I’ll be taking young children on mine; they are great for encouraging me to slow it down while exploring!

4. Bake and Make Preserves

Like many generations of our ancestors, autumn was the time for a final harvest. Many fruits will stop, my cherry tomatoes already have almost finished their season. If you collect a final harvest of certain fruits or vegetables, make a jam or preserve with them!

When I was younger and working full-time in a corporate role, I was always “too busy” to cook regularly. I would spend much more on cafes and eating out. Now I prepare near all food from scratch for my family. I don’t see it as a chore now, I romanticise the process and find immense satisfaction from baking with love.

Some baking ideas I love for autumn include bread, apple and cinnamon muffins and bread.

5. Work on a Hobby

Use your hands to work on a hobby as a way to create. I’ve told my daughter we will learn to knit together for her 5th birthday this autumn. I’m excited to start and know that’s what her birthday present will be!

Another project for me is ordering new seeds that are specific to sowing in autumn. It’s lovely to work with my hands and patiently wait for seedlings.

Working on a hobby that uses your hands is humbling and satisfying. Taking your time, having patience and enjoying the process of creating is how you can romanticise your life with a hobby.

6. Cherish Small Rituals

It’s the small things that warm our hearts. For me, it’s sitting on our balcony watching a thunderstorm over the lake and the kids are excited. It’s drinking my morning coffee while the kids are playing.

Autumn is a time for reflection and gratitude. At the end of your day, reflect on it. Look as it through a grateful lens. What perspective shift can you have to appreciate the mundane? The small rituals, like a morning coffee listening to the birds are often the very best thing for our souls.

7. Soften and Release

Romanticise your life in Autumn by softening into the feminine part of your soul. Don’t allow external expectations push you into your masculine. Work to the balance.

We are already in such an exhausting hustle culture. Pay attention to how your body is feeling when committing to plans or projects. If there are ways of doing things that are softer, lean into those.

As we contract down in autumn, this is a time for you to release. Release ways of being or acting to you can soften.

In Closing

Thank you for reading. I hope you’re feeling inspired to romanticise your life this autumn. Let me if any of this resonates with you.

With slow autumn blessings,
